Designed by Grindline and Clark Condon and opened in 2008 in Buffalo Bayou Park, this in-ground park has one of the largest cradles in the country, a kidney pool and a 12.5-foot deep end; a $2.5 million renovation in 2016-17 added shade and seating.

Heads up · Skate it early on summer days, and after a Houston downpour give the bowls time to dry.

How the read works

We track the water on the ground hour by hour, starting two days back. Rain adds to it; sun, wind and dry air take it away (the forecast's evaporation figure, which folds all three together); frost locks it in. Concrete sheds most of a downpour and dries in a couple of hours on a good day. Dirt soaks it up and takes a day or more, and riding it while it's mud ruts it. It's a model, not a camera: shady corners and the bottom of a bowl hold water longer. Weather from Open-Meteo.
